issues: sin
The scripture uses several words to describe the concept of sin. The two listed below
represent the extremes in definition.
Hubris– The pride that makes a man defy God, and the arrogant contempt which makes
him trample on the hearts of his fellow man.
Hamartia (the most widely used word in the NT) This noun is defined as “missing the
mark.” or “an offense in relation to God with emphasis on guilt”. Another definition is
simply to “fall short”
Hamartia describes sin as both a specific act and as an internal defective dimension of
the human person.

consequences of this failure are alienation. Discuss how this alienation takes place in this
life and in the life to come.
